Article : Executive Mentoring

What is it?

Executive mentoring is the creation of a flexible, one-to-one relationship in which mentees, supported by skilled, experienced mentors, are able to explore, understand and potentially change any aspect of their personal and professional life in a way which makes them more confident and effective in their capability and behaviour.

Leading a business often means making decisions without the benefit of talking or sharing/brainstorming ideas, options and possible solutions before implementing them.
The service is designed to help executives with an external "sounding board" that will help them to think through and tackle business issues as well as provide feedback.

What is a Mentor? Mentors are not consultants, they will only advise from their own vast experience of life and business and are willing to share their skills and know how - and if appropriate their contacts and network. Some of the qualities they have are:
  • The ability to listen and empathise with people
  • A willingness to offer encouragement, sympathy and practical advice, ideas and opinions
  • A respect for other people's views
  • Experience of the problems of running a company
  • A supportive hands-off approach, that allows others to take responsibility for their decisions
  • Complete confidentiality

How it works?

The mentor and mentee meet for an initial meeting to get to know each other and establish whether the "chemistry" between them will create a positive and productive relationship. Assuming this meeting is successful then the next step is setting the outline objectives, prioirities and timetable for the partnership.

Background information and history is exchanged with one another and during the sessions actions and progress reviews take place.

How you benefit

Executive mentoring delivers real benefits by focusing on such issues as:
  • Actions that need to be taken to achieve positive results and maintain performance
  • Options available for dealing with these challenges
  • The implications of pursuing each option
  • Confidentiality in exploring solutions to complex issues
  • Creative solutions
Duration

Individual sessions are arranged to satisfy the mentee's needs and schedule. Time, frequency and length of relationship are flexible. Sessions can vary from 1 - 2 hours, frequency weekly, fortnightly or monthly. The relationship can extend from several weeks to even years.
